Mull's Beaches

Mull has 300 miles of coastline but the beaches worth seeking out are fewer and better for it. No sun loungers, no ice cream vans, rarely another soul. Just sand, sea, and the occasional seal. Most require a wee bit of effort to reach. All of them are worth it.

Calgary Bay ★ The one everyone should see — Northwest Mull — The finest beach on the island and one of the best in Scotland — white sand, turquoise water, low dunes, sheep grazing nearby. Surprisingly easy to reach by car with a good sized car park. Calgary Art in Nature sculpture trail runs through the woodland behind the beach, with a small café at the entrance. Go in the morning before anyone else arrives.

Langamull Beach ★ The quiet one — Northwest Mull — A two-mile walk from the nearest parking brings you to a beach you'll very likely have entirely to yourself. White sand, clear water, views to the Treshnish Isles. Worth every step.

Fionnphort Beach — Southwest Mull — Pink Mull granite rocks framing the bay, views directly across to Iona, seals hauled out on the rocks nearby. Easy to reach, naturally beautiful, often overlooked by visitors rushing for the ferry.

Traigh Ghael Beach ★ Insider pick — Ross of Mull — Reached by a two-mile hike through Tireragan Nature Reserve on the south coast. One of Mull's genuinely hidden beaches — the walk keeps the crowds away. Wildflowers in early summer, complete quiet year-round.

Kilvickeon Beach — Ross of Mull, near Bunessan — Remote and rarely visited. The ruins of Kilvickeon church sit above the beach — a peaceful, quietly extraordinary spot. Dirt track access, suitable for most vehicles with care.

Fidden Beach — South Mull, near Fionnphort — Pink granite outcrops, rock pools, views to Iona and the Garvellachs beyond. A favourite with wild campers. The kind of beach that looks better in real life than in photographs.

Lochbuie Bay — South Mull — A broad sandy bay at the end of the single track road through Glen More. Combine with the nearby Loch Buie stone circle — park at Lochbuie and walk to both. Almost never busy. The drive alone is worth it.
